Immediate Actions

In the event of an emergency involving propane, it is crucial to take immediate actions to ensure your safety:

evacuate
If you suspect a propane leak or encounter any signs of a leak, evacuate the premises immediately. Ensure that everyone, including children and pets, leaves the area promptly.
move
Once you have evacuated the area, move to a safe location away from the propane source. Choose a place that is uphill and upwind from the suspected leak.
call
Dial 911 to report the propane emergency to the fire department. Inform them about the situation, your location, and any pertinent details they may require.

While waiting for help to arrive:

  • Keep everyone away from the affected area
  • Open Windows and doors for ventilation (on the way out)
  • Don't flip light switches on or off.
  • Don't use a telephone
  • Don't use any electrical equipment or lights that might create a spark in the area of the odor
  • Don't use the doorbell
  • Don't adjust thermostats or appliance controls
  • Put out all open flames

If you know how to operate the shut-off valve on your outdoor propane tank, turn it fully clockwise. Only do this if it’s safe.

Shutting Off Gas

Knowing how to shut off the propane supply safely can minimize the risk during an emergency. Follow these steps to shut off the gas:

Familiarize yourself with the location of the leading propane shut-off valve. It is typically located on the propane tank or near the gas meter.

Using caution, turn the valve clockwise (to the right) to shut off the gas supply. If you are unsure or unable to shut off the valve, leave it to the professionals and focus on evacuating the area.

First Aid

While waiting for medical professionals to arrive, it’s essential to provide basic first aid measures in case of propane related injuries:

If someone sustains a burn injury, cool the affected area with cool (not cold) water for
at least 10 minutes. Cover the burn with a clean, dry cloth and seek medical attention.

If someone inhales propane gas and experiences difficulty breathing or respiratory distress, move them to an area with fresh air. If necessary, begin CPR and call for medical help immediately.
