Job purpose
The Field Operations Supervisor’s (FOS) responsibilities include overseeing drivers, service technicians and yard hands at our Timmins/ Porcupine, New Liskeard, Cochrane, Kapuskasing, Hearst and Wawa locations. The FOS is also responsible for maintaining the safe operation of the bulk storage facilities, the cylinder dispensers and the fleet. This position reports to the Market Manager.
Duties and responsibilities
- Supervises day-to-day operations of the east branches to ensure all tasks are completed, safely and efficiently.
- Assigns, coordinates, and schedules the work of employees (including leaves, vacations etc.); participates in interviews of prospective employees, disciplines team, and conducts employee appraisals; establishes work priorities and determines staff requirements.
- Recommends training and development for staff
- Ensures employees hold current and valid licences for their Gas Technician and driver’s licence
- Oversees the maintenance of all east properties and branches to ensure equipment is accounted for, secured, signage is up to code, equipment meets valid calibration and/or licencing, equipment is in good repair, office, buildings, fencing and security are in acceptable condition, there are no environmental or safety issues.
- Maintains licences and regulatory compliance for plants and equipment in the east territory
- Ensures fleet maintenance is up to date, stays on top of inspections, licence requirements, and complies with safety policies and procedures.
- Liaises with colleagues and managers on a regular basis including Market Manager, Sales Manager, Fleet Supervisors, and others
- Works with Market Manager to review branch financials and operations to optimize productivity and costs.
- When requested works with colleagues to assist with service for new and/or existing customers
- Coordinates ordering bulk product for the branches when supply is low and manages the inventory to ensure the supply is replenished when needed. Oversees the monthly inventory
process to ensure all product balances properly.
- Ensure health, safety & environmental policies are adhered to, and all employees abide by hours of work and safe work practices.
- Ensures a work environment for employees consistent with Sarjeant Propane’s values, policies and practices.
- Prepare a variety of weekly and monthly reports for the Management Team,
- Participates in department meetings.

Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of industry experience preferably within operations management
- Ability to travel as required
- Must have strong organizational skills, detailed oriented.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical or operating procedures or regulations, documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and staff
- Mechanical aptitude, proper use of hand tools
- Safety-oriented mentality
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office
- Valid D class Driver’s License
Working conditions
Work requires frequent travelling in the assigned territory. Vehicles will range from pick-up truck to service trucks to bulk delivery trucks, time in large vehicles may result in vibratory exposure.
This standard work hours are Monday through Friday 8am until 5pm, however there may be overtime and weekend work from time to time. The FOS is required to work in various weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind. The position is exposed to some unusual environmental hazards.
